'Threads of Fate' ~ book art in honour of the Norns
DESCRIPTION
"Threads of Fate" is a sculptural book artwork that delves into the mythological concepts of the Norse tradition, particularly the roles and symbolism associated with the three Norns: Urd, Verdandi, and Skuld. The piece comprises a handmade book inside a reindeer leather drawstring pouch, accented with wooden Elder Futhark runes and highlights of 24 carat gold leaf, blind-tooled asemic writing, crystals and pewter detailing. The diameter of the pouch when closed is approx. 15 cm (6")
The book itself is a blend of traditional craftsmanship and digital media. The book pages include seven digital collage cards that explore Norse mythological themes such as Fylgja (the follower spirit), Hamingja (the luck or fortune), Hugr (the thought or mind), and Hamr (the shape or form). Central to the narrative are the Norns, the weavers of fate -past, present and future- who control the destinies of gods, humans and all creatures in the cosmos. The circular pouch surrounded by runes could be likened to the Urdarbrunnr Well at the roots of Yggdrasil, where the Norns water the Tree of Life. The cover of the book shows all the 24 runes in the shape of the Yggdrasil tree, with a raven on the background.
A key feature of the book is the multitude of long threads extending from its spine. These threads represent the meandering and interconnected paths of fate, a concept further depicted as blind-tooled freeform thread-like markings both on the book’s inner cover as well as on the base of the leather pouch. The seven cards on the book pages originate from my ‘Rune Dreams’ Valhalla edition oracle card deck, here repurposed for a one-of-a-kind book art piece as elements in a sculptural story.
"Threads of Fate" is an exploration of how ancient beliefs and stories about destiny and existence are woven together. The use of reindeer leather and Elder Futhark runes roots the piece in the physical and cultural materials of the Norse world, inviting viewers to engage with the rich tapestry of myth and meaning in a tactile, tangible form.
